Today Malia Obama Turns 17

Tarran CarterFILE - In this March 21, 2011, file photo President Barack Obama and his daughter Malia arrive in Santiago, Chile. In an interview Obama concedes he's nervous about his daughter Malia turning 13 in July. Asked how he would feel about Malia starting to date, the president quipped, in a reference to the Secret Service, that "I have men with guns who surround them all the time ... and it means they never get in a car with a boy who had a beer." He said he might ask Malia's date "what his GPA is" and what his intentions and career plans are. But he quickly adds that if the girls are watching the interview, "I'm just joking." Malia turns 17-years-old today, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MALIA! DREAM TEEN Mag takes a look at some of her accomplishments.

The President’s daughter has rapidly become a fashion icon and international designers fight to get a chance to dress her. She currently attends Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Malia’s younger sister, Sasha, also attends the school and recently turned 14-years-old.

Just like her father, Malia is an avid reader, and she enjoys movies. She’s a freshman, and knows she has years in college to explore her interest. The Daily Caller recently noted, Malia and her family have been touring quite a few colleges in preparations for Malia’s big move to higher education soon. Sources say the Obama teen has reportedly checked out Harvard, where her parents attended, as well as Tufts, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, Yale, Wesleyan, Berkeley, and New York University. So far, the family hasn’t shared any further specifics about where she’s aiming to attend or whether a future related to the entertainment industry is on her radar.

Currently Malia is an intern with director Lena Dunham’s HBO show “Girls” in Brooklyn, New York. She was spotted in the Williamsburg area as the show filmed at the Aurora Ristorante. The show filmed at that location for several hours on Thursday, and Malia was seen sipping on a drink while wearing cutoff jean shorts, a sleeveless shirt, and tennis shoes. While it is said that she did spend some time with the star of the show, Dunham, none of the rest of the presidential family was spotted on set with her. As many may remember, Malia also had an entertainment job last summer on Halle Berry’s Extant.

As the New York Daily News reported at the time, the teen scored a production assistant job that was supposed to be kept under wraps, but word leaked out anyway. By all accounts, she did a great job in the position, and it seems her interest in the industry has continued.
